Vein Treatments Q & A

What are veins?

Your veins are the blood vessels in your body that return blood to your heart and lungs for reoxygenation. Unlike your arteries, which deliver oxygen-rich blood from your heart and lungs to the rest of your body, your veins often need to work against gravity to push your blood through.

Your veins contain valves that open and close to help push the blood forward and prevent backflow. If the valves in your veins become damaged or weak, then your blood may flow backward and pool, creating visible veins.

Your visible veins are referred to as spider veins and varicose veins. Spider veins are small red or purple lines that most often appear on your face and legs. Varicose veins are thick, gnarly veins that develop on your legs.

Why are my veins visible?

Your veins are visible due to a malfunction with the valves in your veins that causes the blood to pool, making a vein visible. You are at greater risk of developing these visible veins if it runs in your family or you have a job that keeps you on your feet all day. Carrying excess body weight also increases your risk of these types of veins.

Women are especially at risk of developing spider and varicose veins due to the various hormonal changes that occur throughout their life, including pregnancy and menopause.

What are vein treatments?

If you’re like many people, you may find your spider and varicose veins embarrassing and try to keep them covered with makeup or clothing. But you do have options. Vein treatments get rid of your veins so you no longer have to cover them up.

Some of your vein treatment options include:

  • Support hose
  • Lifestyle modifications aimed at weight loss and increased activity
  • Sclerotherapy, injections that cause veins to collapse
  • Radiofrequency energy to minimize the appearance of spider veins
  • Laser treatment to destroy the vein
  • Surgical removal of the vein

Dr. Lowe reviews your vein treatment options with you to determine the best option for you based on your aesthetic goals and medical history.
